GMT-Master -> 126710GRNR

The 126710GRNR is the grey-and-black ceramic GMT — the “Bruce Wayne” or “Ghost” — that Rolex launched at Watches & Wonders 2024 to fill the subdued-colour gap in the steel GMT-Master II line. GRNR abbreviates gris-noir, grey-black. Collectors who take the GR for green, on the assumption that Rolex designates insert colours by visible hue, have the code backwards.

The steel version closed a rollout the precious-metal references had opened. Rolex showed the Rolesor 126713GRNR and its gold siblings at Watches & Wonders 2023, and the steel followed a year later.

Where it sits in the line

The 126710GRNR fills the subdued-colour slot in the steel GMT-Master II range. The blue-and-black 126710BLNR Batman carries the cooler palette and the red-and-blue 126710BLRO Pepsi the hot one, with the GRNR between them as the restrained option. It is also the first single-colour-dominant Cerachrom GMT-Master II since the all-black 116710LN left the catalogue in 2019, closing a five-year gap in the line.

Reception split on exactly that restraint, between a too-subtle critique and a great-classic defence, and Time+Tide’s team was openly divided. The disagreement traces to a physical property rather than to taste. The grey half of the bezel only emerges in direct light, so launch-week photography was inconsistent and the watch reviewers were describing was not always the same watch.

Production outline

Rolex launched the reference at Watches & Wonders 2024 on both bracelets from day one, the Oyster as m126710grnr-0001 and the Jubilee as m126710grnr-0002. Launch retail was USD 10,700 on Oyster and USD 10,900 on Jubilee. It remains in the current Rolex catalogue.

The precious-metal GRNR references had arrived a year earlier, which makes the steel watch the second stage of a two-year rollout rather than the start of the family.

Movement notes

Caliber 3285, the movement shared across the modern GMT-Master II platform, with a Chronergy escapement, Parachrom blue hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a 70-hour power reserve. Rolex certifies it to the Superlative Chronometer -2/+2 sec/day standard. The local hour hand adjusts independently and the date quicksets.

No movement variation is documented between the GRNR siblings. The 3285 runs across the full current GMT-Master II line without change.

Dial map

Black lacquered dial with white gold applied Maxi markers and Chromalight lume. The green GMT hand and the green “GMT-MASTER II” text are what separate the GRNR dial from the Batman and Pepsi, and both read as a design-code callback to earlier GMT generations. The green does more work here than on the brighter siblings. Because the grey bezel reads as black in most lighting, the accents carry the watch’s visual identity almost on their own.

No dial variants are documented, and the same dial runs on both the Oyster-bracelet -0001 and Jubilee-bracelet -0002 configurations.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

The case is 40mm Oystersteel, about 11.9mm thick and 48mm lug-to-lug, with a Triplock crown, crown guards, 100m water resistance and a sapphire crystal with Cyclops. The architecture is shared with the 126710BLNR, the 126710BLRO and the left-handed 126720VTNR.

The bezel is the reference’s defining feature: grey-and-black two-colour Cerachrom with platinum-PVD numerals, the grey being the gris noir that gives the code its second half. That grey carries a noticeably different optical character from a painted or aluminum grey. It reads near-black in indoor light and shifts toward warm grey in direct sun, which is the whole basis of the “photographs badly, wears well” argument the watch attracted at launch.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Both bracelets launched together. The Oyster -0001 takes the standard three-link Oyster with Oysterlock and Easylink, the Jubilee -0002 the five-link Jubilee with matching clasp furniture. The Oyster was the slightly cheaper of the two at launch and the more common sighting at authorised dealers through the first year of production. Putting a Jubilee on a steel Professional watch carries the same design-code reading as the 2018 Pepsi, a callback to the 1675-era configuration, and the 126710GRNR is one of the few non-precious-metal GMT-Master II references offered that way from the factory.

Special branches

Nickname branches: “Bruce Wayne” and “Ghost”

Two nicknames circulate, both for the same watch. “Bruce Wayne” reads it as the off-duty version of the Batman, Bruce Wayne being Batman’s alter ego, and that is the one the enthusiast press settled on. “Ghost” reads the grey bezel as the Batman’s blue half disappearing into near-invisibility; it turns up in collector discussion but never took hold as widely.

GRNR family siblings

The broader GRNR range covers the 126713GRNR Rolesor, the 126718GRNR yellow gold and the 126719GRNR white gold, all three from Watches & Wonders 2023. They carry the same grey-black ceramic and green-accent dial in warmer case materials, which leaves the steel version as the stealthiest of the four.

Historical market and auction record

No auction-house lot has surfaced for the 126710GRNR. The reference is current production and too new for the major houses to have built the catalogue presence the Batman and Pepsi carry, so nearly all volume moves through authorised dealers and the immediate secondary market. Secondary-market pricing around launch ran modestly above retail.
