The 116500LN is the steel ceramic Daytona, produced from 2016 to 2023. Two dials, one movement, one bracelet. Mechanically it changed almost nothing. Its seven-year run is remembered instead for what happened at the dealer counter, where allocation became the defining story of modern Rolex retail.

The 116500LN replaces the 116520, which had run sixteen years on the same 40mm case, the same caliber 4130, and an aluminum tachymeter bezel that scratched and faded. On paper the change is a bezel swap. In practice it reset where the reference sat in the queue. Demand outran allocation almost immediately and never eased across the full production run.

The launch was messier than the later collector shorthand suggests. At Baselworld 2016 Rolex presented the ceramic-bezel 116500LN as an addition to the line, said the steel-bezel 116520 would continue, and gave no end date for the overlap. The market ignored all of that and treated the ceramic version as the new steel Daytona from day one.

The 126500LN took over in March 2023 with the same ceramic bezel, a slightly thinner 11.9mm case, a reworked Oysterlock clasp, and the new caliber 4131. Rolex reshaped the bezel geometry around the platinum PVD numerals and thinned the subdial rings, but the reference stayed a 40mm steel ceramic Daytona. That leaves the 116500LN holding the older case proportions and the caliber 4130 Rolex had been refining since 2000, a combination now closed off by the end of production.

The case shape matters more here than the spec sheet suggests. The 116500LN kept the older steel-case asymmetry, with slimmer, pointier lugs on one side to balance the visual weight of the crown, guards, and screw-down pushers. The 126500LN moved the steel model onto the broader, more symmetrical lug profile used across the refreshed Daytona line, and added a metal frame around the Cerachrom bezel while leaving the ceramic piece itself monobloc. The 116500LN is therefore the last steel Daytona with narrow lugs and an unframed ceramic bezel.

The precious-metal siblings on the same case generation are the two-tone Rolesor 116503, the yellow gold 116508, and the white gold 116509, all three keeping engraved gold bezels while the parallel LN references carried Cerachrom. The 116500LN is the steel entry point to that family, the reference that brought Cerachrom to the lowest retail rung of the Daytona line.

The 116500LN keeps the 116520's case, movement, bracelet architecture, and most of the dial printing. Bezel material, lume formula, and subdial treatment are the whole of the change.

Production outline

There is no layered generation map here of the kind vintage Daytona references carry. Caliber 4130, the Cerachrom bezel, the Oyster bracelet, and the two dial options held constant for the full seven-year run, and editorial coverage treats the reference as a single era. Forum collectors have logged minor dial-printing drift, but nothing that has hardened into a collector taxonomy.

The end of production is dated loosely across published sources. The narrowest claim puts the final run at 27 March 2023, the day Rolex announced the 126500LN at Watches & Wonders Geneva; others round to 2023 or 2024 without fixing a boundary. The safe reading is that assembly stopped around the successor launch and already-allocated examples kept reaching retail into 2024.

Movement notes

Caliber 4130 is the first fully in-house Rolex chronograph movement. Rolex introduced it in 2000 on the 116520, and it powered every steel Daytona from that launch through the end of 116500LN production in 2023. Twenty-three years is a long time to leave a chronograph design alone.

The architecture is column wheel and vertical clutch, with a 72-hour power reserve. The 116500LN inherited it unchanged from the 116520.

Being in-house is the least interesting thing about the 4130. It simplified the Daytona chronograph after the Zenith-based 4030, bringing a longer 72-hour reserve, a full balance bridge, a free-sprung Microstella balance, the Parachrom hairspring, and a service-minded construction with far fewer screw types than the movement it replaced. Hodinkee, citing a watchmaker, adds refinements that never reach a spec sheet, among them a hairspring protection block and playless gears in the chronograph train. None of that is a variant marker. It does explain why a mechanically static reference still did not feel obsolete in 2023.

The 4131 succeeded it on the 126500LN, keeping the column wheel and vertical clutch and adding the Chronergy escapement Rolex had rolled across the three-hand sport lines through the late 2010s and early 2020s. The efficiency gain shows up in real-world precision rather than power reserve, which stays at roughly 72 hours.

Dial map

Panda (white dial)

The 116500LN-0001 is the white-dial option. A silver-white lacquer base carries three black snailed subdials: the running seconds at 6, the 12-hour counter at 9, and the 30-minute counter at 3. Applied 18k white-gold indices, polished and filled with Chromalight, frame the subdials. A red DAYTONA signature arcs above the six o'clock subdial. There is no date window, consistent with the Daytona's chronograph-first layout.

Panda is collector shorthand for a white face against contrasting dark subdials, and Rolex has never used the term in its own documentation. The combination goes back to the 1960s Paul Newman dials, and the 116500LN is the first steel ceramic-bezel reference to carry it into modern production.

The 116500LN-0002 is the black-dial option. Layout matches the Panda: three subdials at 6, 9, and 3, applied white-gold indices, no date. The subdials are finished in a silver-grey snailed treatment that reads as a softer contrast against the black base than the crisp black-on-white of the Panda. The DAYTONA signature stays red, and the minute track sits in white printing.

The two dials do not trade alike. Panda examples sit consistently above black-dial ones, and the gap has never been satisfactorily explained.

Dial printing drift

Forum threads track small printing differences across the run on both dials. Slightly thinner font weight on some mid-run bottom-line text, minor spacing shifts in the lower half, and subtle subdial-texture variation all show up under macro lighting. None of it has hardened into a named variant, and no collector taxonomy for the 116500LN has formed. Seven years of one dial design, with supplier drift visible only under close inspection.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Case

The case is 40mm in 904L Oystersteel, about 12.2mm thick, with brushed top surfaces and polished flanks. Lug-to-lug runs at roughly 47mm, unchanged from the 116520. The ceramic bezel required no case tooling changes, so the two references wear identically save for the bezel material, and a 116500LN buyer was getting the case and bracelet the 116520 had carried since 2000.

Bezel

The Cerachrom bezel is the reason the reference exists. It is monobloc, so the whole ring including the tachymeter track is one fired ceramic piece rather than an insert seated in a steel surround. Platinum deposited by PVD (physical vapor deposition) forms the numerals and scale graduations, and the cool grey-silver cast it leaves separates a ceramic bezel from an aluminum insert at any distance.

Cerachrom reached the Daytona before this reference did. The Everose 116515LN carried a ceramic bezel from 2011 and the platinum 116506 from 2013. What the 116500LN did was narrower and more commercial. It put the material on the steel Daytona, where waitlist pressure was already worst.

The numeral geometry moved with the material. Aluminum-insert tachymeter scales sat on a flat radial layout; the 116500LN numerals follow a subtly curved axis matched to the ceramic's surface tension and firing tolerances. The difference is invisible in a wrist shot and obvious with a 116520 alongside.

The ceramic is scratch-resistant against anything short of a diamond-edged tool and fade-proof against UV. It fails differently, though. Ceramic breaks before it scratches, so damage on a 116500LN bezel reads as a discrete impact mark instead of the progressive wear an aluminum bezel accumulates.

Crystal

Flat sapphire, and no Cyclops, because the Daytona carries no date. Thickness and radius match the 116520 exactly. Rolex's published documentation specifies no anti-reflective coating.

Crown

Triplock screw-down with crown guards, rated with the case to 100m. The crown is dimensionally identical to the 116520's, carrying the Rolex coronet and the three dots that mark Triplock sealing.

Pushers

The chronograph pushers are screw-down, as they have been across the Daytona line since the 6263, and their feel and travel match the 116520. Unscrewing them before timing anything is the one habitual quirk of Daytona ownership, and nothing here changes it.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Bracelet

Oyster, 20mm at the lugs, solid links throughout, with solid end links coded into the case. Measurement and construction are identical to the 116520 bracelet.

Clasp

The clasp is Oysterlock with Easylink. Oysterlock is the locking safety flap Rolex uses across the modern Professional line; Easylink is the toolless extension, a flip-out internal tab that adds five millimetres in a single step. The Glidelock on the ceramic Submariner adjusts continuously across a wider range. Easylink gives one fixed increment, less travel but faster to deploy on the wrist.

Nothing in the bracelet system changed between the 116520 and the 116500LN. The 126500LN reworked the clasp architecture, which leaves the 116500LN as the last Daytona on the older Oysterlock.

Packaging

Standard Rolex green box of the 2010s-2020s era with warranty card, Superlative Chronometer tag, booklets, and hang tags. Warranty format during the 116500LN run was the credit-card-style card rather than the earlier paper card. Full-set examples in the market carry the card, tag, and both booklets; the earliest examples from 2016 may carry transitional hang-tag formatting.

Special editions

A handful of 116500LN watches left Rolex's production flow with a second dial signature or a bezel-colour swap tied to one retailer. The most visible is the Asprey program, two colours in a limited series of 25 pieces each, delivered through Asprey's London boutique and sold from a back room rather than the retail floor. They carry an Asprey co-signature on the dial and a colour-swapped tachymeter insert, and Rolex's catalog never acknowledged them.

Other 116500LN watches surface with engraved casebacks for institutional customers or double-signed dials for retailer anniversaries. Those are personalisation on a standard watch, not distinct reference variants.

Market and collector context

Few Rolex references have moved the secondary market the way the 116500LN did. At launch in spring 2016, grey-market dealers were selling the white dial at close to seventy percent over list within days of Baselworld. The premium compounded through the late 2010s: roughly €17,000 in 2016, €20,000 in 2018, €23,000 across 2019 and 2020, then a steep acceleration into 2021 when white-dial examples traded routinely above €30,000 and peak Chrono24 listings went past €35,000. GBP prices tracked similarly, with retail around £10,500, Q4 2021 at roughly £32,000, and peak listings at £35,000.

The reference sat at the centre of the 2020–2022 luxury-watch run-up. Authorised-dealer waitlists ran for years. Successful applicants had to show long purchase histories with the dealer, often on lesser references, before an allocation opened. Flipping was policed actively, and buyers who resold inside windows set by individual dealers lost their place for future allocations.

The correction from early 2023 onward brought pricing back toward the mid-$20,000s for white-dial examples and into the low $20,000s for black-dial examples by 2024. The reference still trades well above retail, but the multiples-of-retail era is over. That leaves the 116500LN on its own merits: the last steel Daytona on the 40mm case, the last on caliber 4130, and the first to carry Cerachrom.

The 126500LN inherited the waitlist position without matching its predecessor's secondary-market peak. Whatever the newer watch turns out to be worth, the ceramic-Daytona moment belongs to the 116500LN.
