==Where it sits in the line==

The 1527 sits in the same straight-sided Classic Prince family as the 1862 — neither carries the flared Brancard profile of the 971 or 1490 — but the stepped case treatment is unique to the 1527 within the Prince catalog. The reference launches in 1930 (per the Antiquorum May 2006 Mondani lot 108/33 explicitly dated "Made in 1931," and earlier Antiquorum Vicenza 1992 lot 146 dating one example to 1930) and continues into the 1940s, with the Bonhams NY 2006 lot 15217/9 documented as a 1940s-dated steel + gold-filled example. The brief framing of 1935 launch found in some collector summaries is not supported by the primary auction-catalog evidence; revise to 1930.

The 1527 is contemporary with the 971 / 971A, the 1490, and the 1862. Its position in that group is the visual extreme — the stepped sides give the case a profile that even a casual observer can identify at arm's length. The 971A "Tiger Stripe" is a flat-sided Brancard with bicolor gold ridges that read as smooth bands across a continuous case; the 1527 takes that bicolor concept and reorganizes it into a stepped construction where each metal band is a separately-machined piece of solid gold occupying its own physical step. "Railway" is collector convention rather than Rolex catalog vocabulary. No period Rolex advertisement using the term has surfaced; the earliest catalog use traces to Antiquorum's 1992 Vicenza Oro auction (lot 146), which describes the 1527 as the "Prince Railway" and grounds the nickname in the visual analogy to locomotive forms — the stepped sides reading like the riveted side panels of a 1930s passenger carriage. French-language mirrors render the same nickname as "Chemin de Fer" (literally "iron road"), and Italian collector usage sometimes carries the term as well, but the primary collector convention in English-language auction catalogs is "Railway."

The Robb Report has separately identified a "Gold Jump Hour Railway Prince" as ref. 1571 — a different reference than 1527. The attribution is unverified by other sources and may be a typographical confusion with the 1491HS jumping-hour Brancard. It is logged as an open lead pending further documentation; readers searching for "Railway Prince jumping hour" may end up at conflicting reference numbers depending on the source.

==The case — solid stepped gold, not applied bands==

The 1527 case is the structural anchor of the reference. Each step is a discrete piece of solid gold rather than an applied band over a base case: the white-gold strip is solid 18K white gold (or 9 ct on Glasgow-imported examples), the pink-gold strip is solid 18K rose, and the steps are joined at the case body with the bicolor pattern integral to the construction. A 1527 case cut in cross-section would show alternating gold colors all the way through the case wall, not a base metal with cosmetic plating. This is the canonical authentication tell: a stepped Prince whose bicolor sides reveal a base metal under the gold layers in any wear-revealed spot is not a 1527 in any meaningful sense. Modern fakes rely on plating; period-correct construction does not.

The case body measures approximately 23 mm × 42 mm with horns. Surfaced examples cluster in two slightly different proportions: a shorter form (1527 case 16038, EveryWatch examples) and a longer form (Antiquorum 108/33 Mondani 1931). ==The movement==

The 1527 runs on the same Aegler 7½′′′ T.S. 300 family that powers the upper-tier 1490 and 971 examples. Cal. 350 — the standard 1490 caliber — does NOT appear on 1527 cases in the surfaced auction record; the 1527 is consistently catalogued with the T.S. 300 designation. Movement grading divides into Extra Prima (the dominant grade, 17 jewels, 6-position adjustment, "Chronometer" dial designation) and Ultra Prima (rarer on 1527, 18 jewels, 8-position adjustment marketed as "Officially Tested in Eight Ways," "Officially Certified Chronometer" or "Observatory Quality" dial designations).

The grade ratio reverses the 1490 pattern. On 1490 examples, Extra Prima dominates and Ultra Prima is the upper-tier outlier. On 1527 examples, the same Extra Prima dominance holds but the absolute count of Ultra Prima 1527s is smaller because the 1527 itself is rarer than the 1490 by an order of magnitude. The 1927 Wilsdorf-Aegler shaped-movement patent applies. The Aegler-Rolex relationship was a supplier arrangement until Rolex purchased Aegler in April 2004 (Tim Mosso, Quill & Pad). The cal. 300 winding-stem bridge fail-point applies to 1527 movements as it does to all Prince calibers — a 1527 that sets time then disengages immediately is symptomatic of a broken stem bridge, not a hidden fault.
